WEEK 3
We start the week with the third character design class.
We had to hand in the work we had asked for last week, so we could discuss it together in class.
Most of the day was spent looking at our classmates' designs, talking about them and listening to their ideas. I found it inspiring to hear the different ideas and how they had incorporated the requirements of their characters into their designs.
My work was also discussed, although when I presented it, it was not completely finished, I still want to make some small modifications.
Inbal advised me that even though I had inspired the character in a pumpkin, I should not lose the essence of the character itself, as it has to be believable.
My character will also have two designs; the first one is the human appearance of it, an old maid and its true form which is a skeleton.
We were given a series of tasks to complete regarding the physical appearance of the characters, and also about the story and idea of the graphic novel in which our creations are going to be. I focused more on the latter task.
For now my idea for the comic is that it will be Halloween themed. On the night of the 31st of October some children knock on the door of a very old and majestic house in the neighbourhood where they live to ask for trick or treat.
They will be attended by the maid in her human form and she will give them chocolates and sweets. But, for some reason, (maybe the children want more or because they want to investigate the house), they go inside.
In principle the big revelation I want to show in the story is that the children discover the maid's costume and see that she is actually a skeleton.
My idea I think it could work well for a shorter comic strip, but in this case we have to complete 4 pages and I think I need to elaborate the plot more.
Inbal told me that I should include a conflict for the maid.
It could be in the house they are all skeletons or ghosts and she is the one who interacts with the outside world so she wears a costume.
The children coming into the house and discovering that the whole family are supernatural creatures could be the conflict, but what does she do to avoid it?
Both the story and the character design need development and that's what I'm going to work on this week.
