WEEK 4
This week we started the class with a presentation on the layout of a comic book and the types of panels we can use.
I prepared for this week, the research pages about the environment where the story is going to take place, plus development of the main and secondary characters and the short and long written narration.
In class we started the new task, which is to start planning the 4 pages of the graphic novel and complete one page in a neater and clearer way.
For me, it's been a challenge to figure out how I want to distribute the panels and how I want each of them to look.
I've never been a big comic book reader, so these days I've been researching and looking at multiple examples for inspiration.
Regarding the story itself, although I brought the whole story to class, after the tutorial, both Inbal and I came to the conclusion that the crisis point of the story was too close to the resolution. So it needs a bit more elaboration and to develop something that happens in that space of time, to keep the tension going for longer.
About the kind of aesthetic I want in the comic, I was thinking of doing something that I use in my personal projects, rather than what I usually do in class work. Right now I'm really interested in limited colour palettes with black, red and pink. I thought about making some flat backgrounds based on linework rather than relying on shadows or volumes. I also wanted to keep the characters within this same aesthetic but I think they won't stand out enough and will blend in with the background.
I would also like to play with different perspectives and angles. I already have a clear panel where I want to experiment with this: the moment when Bonney (the main character) looks at herself reflected in the spoon. Here I find it very interesting to play with the image that the spoon shows when we reflect ourselves, which is always distorted and exaggerated, and which also helps the narrative with respect to what is happening in the story at that moment (she wants to see what the children see, which unfortunately is her without the mask, and she looks even more terrifying than usual because of the effect created by the spoon, so her reaction is more dramatic).
For next week I won't be able to attend the class as I won't be in town but I'll prepare as much as I can to be able to send the work so I know if I'm on the right track and what things I have to modify, along with probably thousands of doubts.
(UPDATE, WEEK 11 final of comic)
